How I prepared for the Professional Scrum Master Certification

Reading Time: 3 minutes

The PSM I (Professional Scrum Master I) exam is a certification offered by Scrum.org to individuals who wish to demonstrate their understanding and knowledge of the Scrum framework and its principles. The exam is designed for individuals who are responsible for facilitating and coaching teams in the use of Scrum, including Scrum Masters, project managers, and team leads.

The PSM I exam is an online, open-book exam that consists of 80 multiple-choice questions. It is timed at 60 minutes and requires a passing score of 85% or higher to pass. The exam is based on the Scrum Guide, which is the official guide to Scrum and is maintained by the co-creators of Scrum, Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland.

The exam is designed to test the candidate’s understanding of the Scrum framework, including the roles and responsibilities of the Scrum Team, the events and artifacts of Scrum, and the principles and values of Scrum. It also tests the candidate’s knowledge of how to apply Scrum in a real-world setting, including how to facilitate and coach teams, how to identify and remove obstacles, and how to work with stakeholders.

Exam Preparation

To prepare for the PSM I exam, individuals can take the online Scrum.org courses, read Scrum literature, attend Scrum training courses, and work on real-world Scrum projects. Additionally, Scrum.org provides a sample test to help candidates prepare for the exam, and individuals can also take online practice tests to familiarize themselves with the format of the exam.

In addition to the resources provided by Scrum.org, such as their online courses and sample test, there are other useful resources available to help prepare for the PSM I exam. One resource that I found particularly helpful was the PSM I™ Preparation Quiz – Real Mode by Mikhail Lapshin, which provides practice questions and detailed explanations of the answers. This helped me to solidify my understanding of the material and identify areas where I needed to focus my studying.

Another great resource for preparing for the PSM I exam is the Prep Course for Professional Scrum Master 1 (PSM I) on Udemy.

This course is 6 hours long and it provides a comprehensive overview of the Scrum framework, including the roles and responsibilities of the Scrum Team, the events and artifacts of Scrum, and the principles and values of Scrum. The course is led by an experienced Scrum Master, who uses real-world examples and practical exercises to help learners understand and apply the material. The course also includes quizzes and practice questions to help learners assess their understanding of the material and prepare for the exam.

These resources, along with real-world experience working with Scrum teams, were instrumental in my preparation for the PSM I exam and I highly recommend them to others who are planning to take the exam.
